Open Day Invitation

Saturday 25 March 2023

Potential young players are welcome to come along on Saturday the 25th of March any time between 9:30 and 11:30am. Visitors can take the opportunity to have a look round, find out what we do and have a go on Clarinet, Trumpet or Violin. No experience is necessary, just bring along plenty of enthusiasm and a passion for making music. New members wishing to join us will be able to start from scratch in a new group from the Summer Term, with up to half a term free of charge. Young players with existing experience will be directed into one of our established ensembles. Please see our contact page for directions and links for further information.

New Term September 2022

Dear members of the Northallerton Music Centre

On behalf of our staff and myself, welcome back to the new academic year.  Although it starts with the sad passing of Her Majesty the Queen, we will continue as normal with our planned start on Saturday the 17th of September.  We do recognise and understand however, that some members and members’ families may be participating in acts of remembrance elsewhere.

On a more positive note, we are delighted this week to welcome Noga Ritter and Camilo Majura, visiting professional musicians that will lead the ‘Sounding Out’ – Thirsk project taking place over the October half term break.  This Saturday as taster sessions, they will give some of our members the opportunity to enjoy the invigorating styles and flavours of Latin American music. Think rhythm and fun!

Some of you may know that I have just recently taken over the reins as centre manager and as such I would just like to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Garrie Harvey and I’ve been teaching for more years than I care to remember, mainly in Kent and the London Borough of Bexley.  Following a relatively recent move back to the north east, I currently share a class teaching role at Barnard Castle and work a couple of days a week for NYMS.  Originally, I studied Euphonium, Piano and Conducting at Leeds, but like a lot of musicians, I’m now more of a jack of all trades.  Although my journey in music education is a long one, I am proud to still be absolutely committed to improving access to making music for all.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns,  or any ideas that you think would benefit the centre and the development of our fabulous young musicians.

I am very much looking forward to meeting you all and making music.

Kind regards

Garrie Harvey

County Ensemble Weekend July 2021

We are planning to host a weekend residential at Harrogate Ladies College from Friday July 16th to Sunday July 18th. The course will culminate with a concert performance on Sunday afternoon which will be recorded and available via the Internet later that day.

There will be one ensemble which will resemble a Concert Orchestra. This ensemble will be suitable for all County Youth Orchestra and County Band members as the repertoire will be tailored to those instrumentalists.

The course is open to pupils at Secondary School from year 7 to 13 and first year University students and will comply with all current Covid restrictions and regulations.

The inclusive cost of the residential weekend is £95.

Please express your interest by Friday 19th March by emailing  jane.atkinson@northyorks.gov.uk

Rehearsal venues are to be confirmed.

Initially there will be limited Ensembles offered.

Northallerton Music Centre UPDATE and SUSPENSION of MC

Over the past few days North Yorkshire Music Service has been taking advice from all relevant bodies regarding the unprecedented situation we are facing with the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus.

The decision has been taken to postpone all music centre activities, including concerts and rehearsals, with immediate effect.

This decision has not been taken lightly and it is our belief this is the best course of action given the current circumstances.

As the current situation is fluid we are not in a position currently to predict when we will be able to resume normal music centre activities.

We are looking at options to add additional dates and extend the Music Centre working year as and when we can return to normal.

As soon as I have further information then I will update you accordingly.

All the best and stay safe.
